I have recently joined the LinkedIn community and I have found it to be very simple and straighforward to use. I have also met some people that have helped me through various connections that I made. I was trying to find a home contractor to just get some estimates and a trusted source form LinkedIn gave me someone who did an excellent job. I would recommend LinkedIn to help get your name out there and maybe one day you will be considered that reliable source that gets you referenced.
